Personal Thoughts

Growing up, my family and I would watch the annual airing of Shark Week each summer. Ironically enough, this would always be right before a vacation to the beach. During Shark Week, we watched episodes, movies, and documentaries displaying these fascinating animals. My favorite part was watching how scientists tracked, studied, and analyzed shark behavior. Not only were these people researching sharks, but they were also leading conservation efforts through their research. Watching people create a positive impact while doing something they are passionate about inspired me.

For a while, I wanted to work in the marine biology field. That is until I took a course on it in high school and changed my mind. After that, I became drawn to psychology. Learning about human behaviors and how unique thoughts and feelings can be piqued my interest. At one point, I considered a career as a therapist or psychiatrist. However, psychiatry was quickly taken off the table when I found out med school was involved.

It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I got introduced to the world of personal finance. Little did I know that this course would impact the trajectory of my life as great as it did. This personal finance course only covered the basics: buying vs. leasing a car, credit cards, the Dow Jones, and more. But the basics were all I needed to find my passion. However, the stories my teacher would share about his experiences turned out far more influential.

Teachers are famous for not being paid too well. When I was in high school, I thought you had to make a lot of money to have a lot of money. My teacher was a lifelong teacher and married to another teacher. Yet, he was retiring early and had exciting plans to fulfill during his retirement. “How?!” I would think to myself. By learning about the basics of personal finance and listening intently to his stories, I learned that what matters most is not how much you make, but rather what you do with what you make.

Although my younger self had plans to become a marine biologist or therapist, I believe he would be very proud of where I am today. My career plans may have changed a few times, but my desire to create change through something I am passionate about did not. Here at RCG, I can help my team create positive change every day. We all have a different story and uniquely found our way to RCG — but we all share a passion for collaboratively creating positive change.
