Personal Thoughts

My dad fell ill while I was in high school, and died while I was an 18-year-old college freshman. Although we did not know whether the reason for his illness was fatal, Dad wanted to be sure that Mom understood our family finances, just in case. Mom wanted nothing to do with it — denial is not just a river in Egypt. A few months before he died, Dad went through everything with me: savings, mortgage, life insurance, etc. He authorized me to open their safe deposit box, and he and I made a complete inventory of its contents.

After Dad died, my grandfather helped Mom get her finances organized and I went back to school. But after about a month, Grandpa had to go back to his home. Mom felt lost and panicky. I started going home from college every two weeks to get her to pay the bills and to balance her checkbook. Seeing her anxiety, I made a vow that no matter what happened in my life, I would never allow myself to be that helpless.

I’m proud to work with RCG, where we try to create a comfortable atmosphere for all clients and involve both spouses in financial discussions. We encourage clients to have necessary documents in place for their family in case of life’s changing circumstances. Life planning is at the forefront of all we do and I know from experience just how important that is.
