Athletics has always been an integral part of my identity. Growing up, my parents instilled in my brother and me the importance of excelling both academically and athletically, with the expectation that we participate in a team sport. Through trial and error, we discovered that our strengths were better suited for water rather than land. Swimming and water polo soon became the arenas where the Staton brothers thrived.
When my younger brother chose to follow in my footsteps, I initially felt reluctant to be supportive. Like many older siblings, I wrestled with feelings of being copied. As the years passed, it became clear that he wasn't just following me—he was surpassing me. I had broken my school's longstanding records for goals and assists in a single season, which stood for only two years until my younger brother shattered them—records that still stand today.
At first, our competition strained our dynamic and, at times, hurt our team's success. A shift in mindset was necessary. My senior year, our team's ultimate goal was to defeat our biggest rival, a powerhouse in South Florida and frequent state champions. In the final game, with the score tied and 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, I found myself in a defining moment. Through a remarkable turn of events, I scored the buzzer-beating, game-winning goal by catching the best assisting pass I’ve ever caught from my younger brother, a moment I will cherish forever.
This memory is one of many that helped me recognize the invaluable lessons of teamwork, which extend far beyond the pool. The experiences shaped my ability to collaborate, problem-solve, lead under pressure, think critically, and maintain discipline. RCG truly embraces the team approach and is made up of incredible individuals with talents that strengthen the practice and enhance the overall service to our clients.
